This is one of the most helpful books I have read on the tricky subject of ornament. It is thorough, exquisitely documented, and it manages to fit, in a relatively low-price volume, an incredible amount of indispensable information about its subject matter. The book is a pleasure to read though it is somewhat complex, as the author has taken the time to go deep into the challenges of ornament in our day and age. Trilling's well-thought explanations zero in the diverse details of ornament throughout the ages, including ornament from around the world that has been essential to the rich and awesome development of ornament in Western culture, which I believe is probably its best feature. I use it in my courses on the history of architecture at both undergraduate and graduate levels with great results in class discussions and debates. If you have never read a book on ornament but want to learn something about it or delve more into this subject, this is a great book to start or to continue your education about this awesome aspect of world culture.

This is one of those rare books that makes you look at art--and the environment around you--in a whole new way. If I have any complaints is that I don't know what to follow it with. Fantastic.
I have researched and used ornament from various cultures and time periods to incorporate it into my woodblock prints.This book is truly informative. It is a clear introduction on the use and history of ornament and an good explanation of why it partially disappeared in the 20th century (or mutated into abstraction). it also has many small but good color reproductions to illustrate some key points.Also, I am trying to get in touch with Mr. Trilling, if anybody knows his e-mail or address.
